About Family Promise Of The Lower Cape Fear
Emergency Shelter Program
Family Promise a.k.a. WIHN (Wilmington Interfaith Hospitality Network) unites communities of partners in a collaborative effort to assist homeless families. On a rotating basis, 13 host congregations provide accommodations and meals for up to four families for one week, four times a year. An additional 25 congregations support the hosts, providing material, human, and financial resources to support the program. Volunteers from the community provide meals and support services. Our office is located in The Harrelson Center at 20 N. 4th Street, Suite 440, where staff works intensively with the families as they seek jobs, housing, health care, and other resources necessary for independent living.
Families Forward Transitional Housing
Family Promise owns 12 units of transitional housing for families who are victims of domestic violence. Our transitional housing program provides a low-cost place for these families to heal physically, mentally and financially to become independent. Our program allows these families to stay for up to two years.
In transitional housing, heat, electric, and water/sewer are paid by FPLCF, with the family responsible for telephone, television, and internet access. We provide the needed furniture and household items each time a family moves into an apartment. The families can take these with them when they leave. This minimizes the funds they may expend when moving into new housing. Case management services and our financial education program “New Beginnings” are provided to families to ensure their successful transition to independence. This transitional housing is provided for no more than 30% of the family’s income.
